If you like their "New Blood" LP, you'll definetly be into this. They haven't changed a bit, and that's a good thing! Combining elements of Classic Hardcore like RKL and POISON IDEA w/ some metallic elements ala Motorhead & Metallica with a bit of Danzig-ish vocals here and there. NITAD "Nu Borjar Minnena Komma Tillbaka" 7" (No Way) $4.99 Brand new 7" From Swedens NITAD. On this platter they have 4 great tracks of their awesome brand of Swedish Meets US Hardcore punk. Best songwriting, best recording, best art, just all around perfect. The songs are catchy but just so powerful and in your face, it's ridiculous. Incredible bass lines, incredible guitar leads, pummeling drums and furious but well sung vocals all round this record out very well. This isn't rehash hardcore punk, that's why it's so hard to describe and their so underestimated, but do yourself a favor and pick it up. REPROBATES "Stress" 7" (No Way) $3.99 Debut release from this Toronto, Canada, 5-piece hardcore punk outfit. 5 songs of strained, fucked up hardcore punk. This band has 2 guitars, which brings a lot to the table... a wall of fuking noise over top of abusive, punchy HC. This stuff brings to mind bands like NOTA, JERRY'S KIDS and even some old foreign HC like INFERNO, NO SECURITY, MOB 47, and UPRIGHT CITIZENS. THE MEATMEN "Happy Fuckin' Easter Asshole" 7" (TKO) $7.99 The legendary Meatmen return with one track pulled from the "Dead Dave Show" and two Germs covers from a forthcoming Germs tribute record. Limited to 500 copies left over from Record Store Day 2011. LP's/12" CHRONIC SICK "Cutest Band In Hardcore" LP (No Way) $11.99 Finally legitimately reissued on vinyl for the first time in 28 years! This NJHC cult classic has been under the radar for decades and the original, limited to 300 copies on Mutha Records, now fetches up to $1500 on eBay! Although Horse Bites Dog Cries was not a commercial success, it has gained a cult following in recent times, and has been regarded by some critics as the D.I.'s best album. The best thing really about DRY SPELL is you can't pigeon hole them into one genre of HC Punk or the other. RICHARD HELL and the VOIDOIDS "Blank Generation" LP (Rhino) $14.99 This is the way this record was meant to be heard. Richard Hell was one of the first men in the emerging NYC punk rock as an early member of both Television and the Heartbreakers (he left both groups before they could record), but his own version of punk wasn't much like anyone else. While Hell's debut album, "Blank Generation," remains one of the most powerful to come from punk's first wave, anyone expecting a Ramones/Dead Boys-style frontal assault from this set had better readjust their expectations. While there's little on the album that's friendly or life-affirming, there's a crackling intelligence to songs like "New Pleasure," "Betrayal Takes Two," and "Another World" that confirmed Hell had a truly unique lyrical voice, at once supremely self-confident and dismissive of nearly every thing around him (sometimes including himself). The tape of the first demo was discovered when Dischord started work on the 'Twenty Years of Dischord' boxset. While the pedal is always to the floor, it's the weird little parts--quirky touches that remind one of Die Kreuzen's first LP or HŸsker DŸ circa Everything Falls Apart--that really separate this band from the pack. If you're going to start your album with that reference, you'd better be able to back it up, and likewise, Throw Rag's history of great live shows threatens to make any studio album a letdown. But 13 Ft. and Rising lives up to all those challenges. Dino, the guitarist, moves easily from punk to country and back, but the musical core of this album is a series of wonderfully sleazy-sounding riffs that recall the best of Link Wray. The lyrics jump quickly from one subject to the next, like rants of an overheated mind, and Captain Sean Doe's vocals strain to stretch out the most painful parts of the songs. Jacko, possibly the only washboard player/bugler in rock, sings lead on a couple tracks and makes the most of the opportunity, especially on the visceral "Rotten Me." That's too bad because the songs on here are way better than any of the versions that were later re-recorded for The Crew LP. The songs sound way more pissed off (the cuss words that didn't appear on later versions of some of the songs help a little to fuel that opinion) and Kevin's guitar playing is just really intense sounding, complete with his own little thrown-in 2-second noodling licks on a few songs. These songs played way faster than the later versions. Three songs from this session were later released on the Blasts From The Past EP. The heaviest influences are common, but maybe A.N.S. grab from less obvious albums, combining here a killer blend of the "professional hardcore" of "Feel the Darkness" era Poison Idea, the drugged out heavy metal / classic rock influenced punk of "My War" and beyond Black Flag, plus the high energy crossover thrash of "Lights, Camera, Revolution" era Suicidal Tendencies. It's a serious crossover record, sharpened by countless tours over the past few years hitting Japan, Europe and US repeated and relentlessly with dates for more global shows well into next year being confirmed now. -TC Site ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT "The Collection" CD (Taang) $13.83 Pioneering the crossover/thrash scene, Attitude Adjustment formed in 1985 in the Bay Area and spent their years playing alongside D.R.I., Suicidal Tendencies, Dr. Know, C.O.C, R.K.L., Death Angel and more, and put out three records, all of which are collected on this disc, including "American Paranoia" and "No More Mr. Nice Guy" that were both released on Pushead's Pusmort label and "Out Of Hand." All of these releases have been out of print for years and are highly sought-after. 41 Songs. BAD BRAINS "Black Dots" LP (Caroline) $14.34 By the early summer of 1979 the Bad Brains were already tearing up Washington D.C. They were armed with a tape they made at rehearsal, a real rugged thing, and were looking for people to play it to. The Slickee Boys heard it and suggested the band go out to record these songs at the fledgling Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, VA. The "Black Dots" LP is the band's first full length session of any kind in a recording studio. At that time Inner Ear was Don Zientara's basement. Don had a four track Teac 1/4" tape deck and a small drum booth to one side of the basement. Doc and Darryl set up in the main space while Earl somehow got himself into the "closet" with his drum kit. HR was in the backyard with the vocal mic (you can hear Don's son speaking to HR between tracks along with some crickets too) and Don was set up in the kitchen upstairs. This day everything was just right and the band played straight through their live set of that time including "Black Dots" and "Pay to Cum", songs that were just too fast to ever be performed live to the band's satisfaction. The set on this record represents all of the band's songs, their first month's output, starting with the first song the band ever wrote, "Don't Need It." Perhaps the best Midwest hardcore LP (no, I'm not forgetting Negative Approach), Die Kreuzen's debut album is a total freak-out of fast, oddly arranged songs and maniacal vocals. With the exception of Siege, no US band has come close to the demented, raw ferocity of Dan Kubinski. He sounds like a demon from another planet (or at least Italy). The music has an edge to it to, at times riffing it up Minor Threat style, other times more choppy and bass-driven like the Necros, but often with a weird tempo or time-change. -KFTH Site DIRECT CONTROL "Farewell" LP (Feral Ward) $15.49 Richmond, VA' Direct Control bid adieu to the world with "Farewell," one final parting shot that's packed with pure hardcore punk fury, played by gentlemen who have done time in bands like Government Warning, Career Suicide and even Municipal Waste. Over the past few years they have channeled the spirits of bands like Koro, Honor Role and the earliest of COC. DWARVES "Blood, Guts & Pussy" LP (Sub Pop) $11.44 Universally recognized as the group's high-water mark, this is a roller coaster ride of bad taste that holds nothing sacred. If you like your punk fast, rude, raucous, drug induced, and dirty this still may be too much for you. On June 27th, 2004 Insted played the legendary CBGB in New York City and the show was recorded and documented for this release. 18 songs filled with energy and positivity. KNIFE FIGHT "Crisis" LP (Lengua Armada) $11.98 Crisis is the final recording by these Southern California legends featuring 10 more songs of their signature style of hardcore. LOOK BACK AND LALUGH "S/T" (LBAL) $10.09 Look Back And Laugh features members of Yaphet Kotto and Dead And Gone, but they don't sound anything like either band really. Instead they are going with a rough and tumble early '80s hardcore sound. Well done and what you would expect from seasoned hardcore musicians. MARGINAL MAN "Identity" LP (Dischord) $10.30 Marginal Man was one of the first of the DC hardcore bands to feature two guitars and was first introduced to the DC crowds at the "555" concert at the 9:30 club on Jan. 2, 1983. The show was billed as "555" because not only was Marginal Man a five-piece, but both Minor Threat and Faith had recently added second guitars to their line-ups, and this was a coming out party of sorts for all three. There was a massive turn-out and tickets sold out almost immediately, so a second show was added to accommodate the crowds. This surprised almost everyone and made it clear for the first time that local bands were beginning to draw a lot more attention than many touring acts coming to Washington. Other than Minor Threat, Government Issue, and Scream, Marginal Man was one of the few early DC punk bands to get out and tour the country.
